The Danish designer celebrates his 10th year of shows in Paris, with a quirky yet wearable collection of gentlemanly knitwear, harem pants and 1920s felt hats

Danish designer Henrik Vibskov will soon celebrate his 10th anniversary of Parisian runways. This collection, despite its typical theatrical, multi-media setting, was surprisingly wearable: a controlled colour palette of blues, earth tones and occasional red or yellow splashes. Belted knitwear, harem-inspired slacker pants and plenty of suits brought a whiff of gentleman-ness to the hairy sock shoes and 1920s felt hats that appeared on each outfit. As for the recurring small handbags and nightgowns worn on top of trousers, they contributed to the designer’s timelessly cuckoo charm.

Dazed Digital: What story are you telling?
Henrik Vibskov: Seven years ago I created an instrument, and I thought I should do it again. It’s kind of a Henrik instrument: all the models are generating a sound, an analogue sound, an acoustic sound and a sample sound, so they can actually create a chaos, for a massive and spectacular result.

DD: Do you sense of stylistic evolution?
Henrik Vibskov: Kind of. I’d done a lot with glasses in the past, you know, small, funny glasses, so I thought that’s something I shouldn’t do this time. Instead, we worked with hats to cover the eyes; we used a lot of energy to create that identity and in three-week time when we do the show in Copenhagen, the female connection will also come in and make it even stronger.

DD: What’s the connection between today and the next female collection?
Henrik Vibskov: The two are always part of one story – this time, it’ll be like a small society, a little group where the men and the women all come from, a group of weirdo straw people; there’s less makeup overall. All the men have beards. Pretty hot, no?

NOWFASHION spoke to Henrik seconds after the show about his coming of age.

So what are we seeing today?

Well, we have hats with fadings, socks with straws that kept falling of – but that’s how it goes. Lots of knitwear, low caps, and drums packed in white.

Do you sense a certain evolution in your clothes, your brand?

I don’t know, but it seems there were a lot of people tonight, so we’re hopefully going the right direction. It’s also my tenth anniversary showing in Paris.

People often call you eccentric, do you feel that way?

Maybe I am? I’m pretty loose. I like to create worlds and look into different colors every time.

The palette was rather controlled this time though…

Yes, I counted how many colors I used for the show and tried to do less of that – white is the keyword.

We are looking for an intern to assist with the Henrik Vibskov Boutique Web: Webshop, editorial and graphic work.  You will become experienced in e-commerce and be given the opportunity to improve your journalistic skills.  You will be working in both our Copenhagen Studio and Boutique. It will be approximately 37 hours per week, spread over five days, and of course we are quite flexible with study commitments.  

Your duties will include:
 • Handling, updating and maintaining the Webshop 
• Writing stories for the Henrik Vibskov blog 
• Assisting in the research of images and editing stories
• Newsletter development   

You will need:
 • To be fluent in english 
• Skills in both Photoshop and InDesign 
• To be independent, curious and outgoing 
• To have an interest and knowledge in fashion and lifestyle

This is a non-paid internship, however there is potential to grow within the company, and a great learning curve is guaranteed.

This time the starting point and inspiration of the collection originates from Don Cherry’s album `Codona´ recorded with fellow musicians Collin Walcott and Nana Vasconcelos. Here, band members used the first two letters of their names to create the album title.

For this collection, the Japanese words Otona (Adult) and Codomo (Child) are combined to create the word ‘Codona’. The `Codona´collection refers to the adult who retains the curiosity, the openness and the playfulness of a child without the prejudice learnt in later life.
The collection is variable and playful but mature at the same time. It shows variations of inside out and upside down, playing with forms and colours while leaving the wearer freedom to experiment.

Who – Svenja Specht – a product and fashion designer and creator of Reality Studio (founded in 2005) with previous experiences working worldwide in Paris, Cologne and Beijing. She now lives and works in Berlin.

"DINING AND DASHING: In his temporary Berlin store 100 Days, Henrik Vibskov recreates the mood of his fall fashion show in Copenhagen, which featured models and attendants setting and then sitting at a grey and orange table. The shop, located next door to fellow Danes Wood Wood, popped up Sept. 30, and is to close Jan. 3.

A gray table in the center of the main room is set with bottles of Vibskov's new scent line, called Type, amidst a culinary still life.
