WORLD PREMIERE: LAUGHTER IN THE DARK / HOTEL PRO FORMA, MUSIC BY NILS FRAHM, COSTUMES BY HENRIK VIBSKOV

Once upon a time there lived in Berlin, Germany,
a man called Albinus. He was rich, respectable, happy; one day
he abandoned his wife for the sake of a youthful mistress; he loved;
was not loved; and his life ended in disaster.

Thus begins Vladimir
Nabokov’s novel Laughter in the Dark: a grusome yet brilliant story
of Albinus. A man who is seduced by his own desire for a young
girl and leaves his wife and child. He later loses his sight and
deceived by his young lover and best friend. It is a tale of human
nature: hate, desire, evil and helplessness.

This classic story
is told through a series of visual and audio effects. The audience
experiences how their own senses are influenced and
challenged in combination with the main characters’.

“Painfully beautiful.”
—Politiken (Denmark)

"In this beautiful, audacious merging of Japanese manga imagery, texts from traditional Noh theater, electronic sounds, and new music sung by the Latvian Radio Choir, War Sum Up ponders the essence of war.

Twelve bodies, shadow-dappled and anonymous, stand on a looming stage. They inhabit a scarred two-dimensional world, trapped behind projections of images of combat: an explosion, a suit of armor, a hand turning into a gun. Amid this stylized tableau are lush, dissonant chorales by Latvian composer Santa Ratniece, alternating with crackling soundscapes by British electronic pop group the Irrepressibles, intoning hymns to the warrior, spy, and soldier."

Music by The Irrepressibles, Santa Ratniece with Gilbert Nouno
Concept by Willie Flindt and Kirsten Dehlholm
Musical direction by Kaspars Putnins
Costumes by Henrik Vibskov
Lighting design by Jesper Kongshaug
Libretto from classic Noh theater edited by Willie Flindt
Manga drawings by Hikaru Hayashi

PRESS: HENRIK VIBSKOV IS LIVING OUT HIS OWN TEENAGE CRUSH WITH HOTEL PRO FORMA'S - WAR SUM UP

War Sum Up is the title on a unconventional opera, which dramatically tells about the war, inspired by the fascinating Japanese manga world. It is the creative team Hotel Pro Forma, who created the breathtaking story including 12 Japanese singers and a captivating lighting design that provides a strong visual experience. In the creation of the ambitious opera, Hotel Pro Forma pulled hold of the imaginative designer Henrik Vibskov, who can conjure adventurous and avant-garde clothes. We have caught Vibskov for a few quick questions about inspiration, music and Friday schedules.

Why did you say yes to make costumes for War Sum Up?
Ever since I saw a picture in "Weekendavisen" in 1995 from the image opera Operation : Orfeo, I have kept an eye on Hotel Pro Forma's productions - and suddenly 16 years later there was an email from their boss.

What was the inspiration?
Felt Carpets, Japanese battle suits that jumps out of parachutes with an ounce of sci-fi added lots of 15 color tests of gray flour.

What is the difference between designing opera rather than the street?
Usability, light, distance, makeup and tones.

Which album is on repeat right now?
An old album from "Er de Sjældne", the new "Little Dragon" - and soon the new "Choir of Young Believers".

Next must see movie?
Stanley Kubrick documentary Stanley Kubrick's Boxes by the English journalist and author Ron Johnson.

New favourite restaurant?
Indian bodega restaurant in Griffenfeldsgade - daily specials for 50 kr

What are you doing Friday night?
I do not know yet ... But it's my only Friday in Denmark this month, so either it becomes wild or very quiet.
